I read a galley of this some time ago--well, some of the stories, as it got buried under a pile of other books. Rankin's story is very good, and I enjoyed Laura Lippman's a lot as well.

In terms of print short story anthologies it's going to be a good year for that in 2005, with THE COCAINE CHRONICLES (April) BROOKLYN NOIR 2 (July)--and that's just from Akashic. Never mind when they fully get into the Capital Noir series and it'll be shorts everywhere...

Looking forward to this, plus COCAINE CHRONICLES. Larry Block has been asked to edit MANHATTAN NOIR for Akashic (it's late, I hope I spelled that right). He's writing a story for it as well but he's the only writer I know in it right now.

Maybe print anthos, shorts collections are on the upswing. Cross fingers and toes.

I also hope so, Candace. As it happens, because of the success of BROOKLYN NOIR, the series is expanding to a whole bunch of other cities, including Dublin (edited by Ken Bruen, and the demand is so high there may be 2 volumes) Baltimore (edited by Laura Lippman, Chicago (edited by Neal Pollack) and DC (edited by George Pelecanos) and of course Larry's Manhattan. It's a great idea on many levels b/c the promotion aspects can be tied to the city or borough.

I wanna edit Detroit Noir dammit. Murder capital of the country, just think about Loren Estleman, Steve Hamilton, Jon Jackson, Rob Kanter and others in the same volume...

You got my vote Byron. Long as I get to edit El Paso Noir. Second choice, Denver Noir.

That's cool.
Hell, I'm up for Atlanta Noir. Trust me. If this is really The City Too Busy To Hate, then we've got a real problem here in the Sunny South.
